Ways to make your wedding more sustainable

Ways to make your wedding more sustainable

As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, many couples are looking for ways to make their wedding day more sustainable. Although it may seem daunting there are plenty of ways to plan a wedding that is both beautiful and eco-friendly.

Here are our top 10 tips for going green on your big day:

1. Select a sustainable venue: Look for a wedding venue that has eco-friendly features such as solar panels, wildflower meadows and energy-efficient appliances. Consider outdoor spaces like country farms or gardens, which may have a lower environmental impact than indoor venues. Leicestershire based and ECOsmart certified tipi wedding venue Sheepy Meadows is the perfect example of this.

2. Crack down on carbon: Encourage guests to car share or use public transportation to reduce carbon emissions from travel. Choose accommodation that has sustainability accreditation or has green initiatives such as the option to skip room cleans for short stays.

3. Go paperless: Use digital invitations to reduce paper waste. If you must use paper, choose recycled or recyclable materials.

4. Ditch non-sustainable decor: Use locally-sourced flowers and foliage, or consider using potted plants that can be reused or planted after the wedding. Use sustainable lighting options like candles or LED lights.

5. Go plant based: Opting for organic, locally-sourced, plant based food or at least having this as an option can have a lower environmental impact. Avoid single-use plastic cutlery, plates, and cups where possible.

6. Try alternative transportation: Look to use electric or hybrid vehicles for transportation on your wedding day if your venue of choice has vehicle charging facilities. You could also up the romance factor whilst limiting carbon emissions with some horse-drawn carriages.

7. Ditch disposable: Avoid using disposable items like plastic straws, balloons, and confetti. Instead, use biodegradable or reusable options, there are many alternatives available on the market.

8. Donate decorations: After the wedding, donate or repurpose decorations like flowers, table settings, and other decor items, speak with your venue or wedding planner they may know of people who could use them. Consider donating leftover food to local food banks.

9. Find eco-friendly favours: There are a growing number of eco-friendly favours out there, gifts like plants, seeds, soaps or reusable items are popular.

10. Shop preloved bridal wear: Shop for the dress of dreams at a sustainable store that specialises in preloved bridal wearsuch as Bridal Reloved Leicester. This will not only help save the planet but could save you money too. What’s not to love?!
